After-School Program
Our after-school academic enrichment program focuses on Math,
Reading and Science, the Arts, Sports and Character Development.Each
student will have a laptop computer that is downloaded with
educational software such as Read Naturally, Star Math, Martina
and Fizz Math Adventures, and Prime Time Math. The core academic
subjects will be woven into all lessons so students learn
how reading, math and science work together. Our curriculum
is inquiry-based and uses hands-on methods that engage students
in their learning. Lessons are tailored to students’
developmental needs and are gender and culturally appropriate.
The Learning Lab provides at no cost:
- Academic assistance and one: one tutoring for students
in grades 1 through 8.
- Homework assistance
- Sports clinic every Friday
- Arts program
- Transportation for students from school and also to
their homes
- Nutritious meal daily
- Monthly family events for registered participants
There are two sessions to choose from:
Session 1 is from 3:00-5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Session 2 is from 4:30-6:30 PM Monday through Friday.
The Arts Program
Arts program is a collaborative with artists throughout the
community. Program offerings include:
- Skill-based (fabric design, clothing design, culinary)
- Language (poetry, bookmaking, creative writing, story-telling,
spoken word)
- Visual (sculpture, painting, drawing)
- African drumming and dance
Sports Clinic
Inner City Tennis is a collaborative that will provide athletics
opportunities for Learning Lab students every Friday from
3 PM– 6 PM. Offerings include obstacle courses arranged
by age and skill level to develop speed, agility, balance,
coordination and motor skills. As the year progresses sports
will be offered; basketball, soccer, baseball, tennis and
badminton.
Family Literacy
A free program for youth, ages 3 to 4 years of age is held
every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 AM until noon.
Parents are invited to attend class with their child to observe
what their child is learning and to promote a healthy involvement
in their child’s education. Field trips are included.
